tumors
A consultant and director of the Oncology Fellowship Program in King Fahd Medical City and Chairman of the Local Supervision Committee of the Oncology Fellowship in the Central and Eastern Region, Dr. Abdullah Khalaf Al-Tuwairqi revealed the latest medical developments and developments related to oncology, especially the discovery of immunotherapy that has proven its effectiveness and has become an native to traditional chemotherapy in a certain number of tumors And in the advanced stages of the disease, pointing out that several medical authorities in Saudi Arabia have started to provide the drug to treat its patients.
Dr. Al-Tuwairqi said that "immunotherapy works to stimulate the immune system in the body and enhance its capabilities to fight different types of tumors, and recent studies have proven the ability of this treatment to control the disease for long periods and achieve high recovery rates and the lowest possible side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy in a number of tumors ".
He added, during a medical lecture on the sidelines of a conference of the European Society of Medical Oncology in Copenhagen, Denmark: "Immunotherapy is characterized by the use of various types and methods that collectively contribute to stimulating the patient''s immune system to confront tumors, where cancer cells have specific characteristics and mechanisms that allow them not to be discovered by the device Immune system. "
Dr. Al-Tuwairqi stated that immunotherapy helps the immune system in the body to recognize cancer cells and then target them. Clinical experiments and research have shown the efficiency of this type of treatment and its ability to target tumors more effectively compared to traditional methods and methods of treatment, in addition to its fewer side effects And its scope of wider and wider use.
Dr. Al-Tuwairqi indicated that immunotherapy is now widely used in treating different types of tumors affecting the skin, lungs, kidneys, head and neck tumors and some lymphoma. Because cancer cells are characterized by a set of methods and mechanisms that allow them to evade the immune system, several types and patterns of immunotherapy have been developed to help the body cope with these protective mechanisms and enhance the capabilities of the immune system to recognize the tumor.
Dr. Al-Tuwairqi said that the researchers ’efforts are currently focused on developing various types of immunotherapy on a greater number of tumors and in innovative ways to enhance the cure rates of these diseases in the near future.
He noted during the lecture organized by "MSD" that the most common tumors in Saudi Arabia, according to the National Register of Oncology, include both breast tumors, colon and rectal tumors, blood and lymphoma, lung and thyroid tumors. Colon and rectal tumors are the most common type of tumor among men, while breast tumors are the most common among females. He added that health education and early diagnosis play a pivotal role in preventing tumors and reducing mortality from them.
For his part, the head of the medical oncology sector in Saudi Arabia said, "MSD" that "helping people to fight cancer is our concern, and supporting providing access to the latest methods of cancer treatment is our commitment, and we focus our efforts on conducting research and studies in immunotherapy For tumors with the goal of achieving new hope for cancer patients. "
He added, "We hope that the discussions held in the workshop will help to provide more awareness of the treatments available to healthcare professionals and cancer patients, and to facilitate access to the best treatment and care for cancer patients."
