during fasting

A Saudi dentist advised to avoid the embarrassment caused by bad breath during fasting, explaining that this smell is a fundamental factor from the psychological point of view that may affect a person''s self-confidence during and during his interaction with others during fasting, lest it cause any disturbing smell to others. According to dentist Dr. Samir Abdullah Al-Thumairi, this problem is exacerbated by our inability to accurately sense the smell of our own mouth personally because the smell receptors adapt after a certain period and are not able to distinguish the smells of the person himself, and it may represent the internal inconvenience resulting from our feeling of an unpleasant taste in The mouth is an additional factor for concern with the importance of adhering to healthy oral and dental hygiene behaviors.

Dr. Al-Thumairi listed the causes of bad breath during fasting in four factors

The first is the natural factors that cause dry mouth associated with fasting, which leads to increased odors from the mouth and increases with it in cases of great effort during fasting, with the accompanying exposure to the sun for long periods and the person not getting enough fluids the previous day.

The second factor: Food: Some foods contain components that transfer to the blood and are then excreted in the form of respiratory gases that leave the lung with the breath, and the most famous of these foods are garlic, onions, and various spices.

As for the third factor that causes mouth odor, it is behavior: that some behaviors represent an additional factor that helps to exacerbate the problem of mouth odor during fasting, and the most important of these factors are smoking, lack of attention to dental hygiene after meals, and not washing teeth before bed.

Fourth factors: Health: represented by the fact that some health problems exacerbate the problem of unpleasant mouth odor during fasting, and are divided into: health problems in the mouth and teeth, decay, mouth and gum infections, mouth ulcers, fungi of the mouth and tongue, and general health problems, especially diabetes. When sugar levels are high and not properly controlled, in addition to respiratory infection, especially the upper part, chronic liver failure, and chronic kidney failure, and the stomach microbe that causes ulcers is believed to have a role in bad breath.

Dr. Al-Thumairi called for cleaning the teeth with the brush, paste and dental wire properly after the pre-dawn meal and after breakfast, and to use the toothpick correctly, and to leave the food that causes odors, and he also stressed that fasting is a great opportunity to quit smoking, stressing the need to see the dentist if the problem of unpleasant mouth odor persists.
