The participants emphasized on the words of the conference president, Dr. Abdul-Wahid Al-Mushaikh, the focus on treating some tumors such as breast and rectal cancer as well as the thyroid gland in specialized hospitals and oncology centers to provide all capabilities and expertise for integrated treatment by a medical team consisting of all specialties dealing with oncology (oncologists and surgeons and radiotherapy doctors). They called for drawing up a clear plan for joint scientific cooperation between doctors in the Ministry of Health hospitals and the doctors of the specialized hospitals located in the same region, which would benefit the treatment of patients with cancer in terms of rapid diagnosis, correct initial treatment and speed of transfer.
They called for holding educational and training courses for primary care physicians and trained physicians, covering introductory lectures on various tumors, their implications and primary sign, for early diagnosis of the disease.
They stressed the fight against obesity and the establishment of specialized centers for the treatment of obesity, including surgical treatment, due to its close association with cancer such as esophageal, pancreatic, colon and rectal cancer, and an educational campaign to urge sports and physical fitness for its preventive role against cancer. They also demanded another educational campaign to reduce the consumption of red meat, especially Those offered by fast food restaurants, and encouraging mutual visits and joint scientific seminars between oncology doctors and surgeons in the Kingdom and their counterparts from Western centers to learn about everything new in the field of oncology and exchange experiences.
It is noteworthy that the third international surgical conference organized by the Department of Surgery at King Fahd Specialist Hospital in Dammam this year focused on "developments in tumor surgery". The first conference in 2006 focused on pediatric surgery, and it was in cooperation with the Saudi Society of Pediatric Surgeons. As for the second conference, it was in 2008 and focused on surgery of the liver, pancreas and bile ducts.
