In the fifteenth century, Louis II, governor of the province of Savoy (in France), believed that sleep prolonged a special place for sleep lovers. Because he was aspiring to be over the age of 100, he decided to sleep for 20 hours a day. And he used to take drugs and herbs to ensure this purpose. Thus, he only woke up twice a day, ate food, went to the bathroom and ran the affairs of the district .. However, this strange system quickly worsened his health, so he died during sleep and was not yet fifty !!

Today, there is an acceptable explanation for what happened to this idiot .. Last week, the University of California announced the results of a strange study linking the average life and the number of hours of sleep, it is known that an adult human does not need to sleep for more than eight hours (and can easily adapt to six hours a day) . Professor Daniel Krebeek compared the average life span and the hours of sleep, and discovered that too much sleep may cause premature death .. The research team studied the sleep habits of a million citizens (over a period of six years) and discovered that a group who slept for eight hours was 12% more likely to die. From the category that sleeps for seven hours. Not only that, but it was found that the group who slept for five hours lived longer and enjoyed better health than those who slept for seven or eight hours .. As for shortening the length of sleep to four hours only, it became clear that it "shortens life" by a rate equal to those who sleep for more than eight hours !!

It is believed here that too much sleep weakens the heart muscle and causes a lethargy of the organ functions. Whereas mental capabilities can be renewed within only six hours, the increase becomes a "waste of life" and discouragement of the body''s tasks !!

It is unfortunate that the study did not pay attention to the negative consequences of sleeping for more than eight hours a day. Most of us know people who, if they slept at the eleventh, did not wake up until twelve (the next day). Personally, I know someone who goes back to sleep for two consecutive days and then sleeps the entire third day !!

While they voluntarily chose to sleep for a long time, there are those who suffer from compelling pathological motives, it is known that there are diseases and psychological states that cause sleep for record periods of time. For example, a while ago I read about a Saudi citizen who spent most of his life sleeping. He slept 16 to 20 hours a day and was suddenly sleepy anywhere. Dr. Saleh Al-Damas (from King Faisal Specialist Hospital) says that the patient suffers from a rare condition called “compulsive sleep” as a result of a viral infection that affects the nervous system and causes sudden numbness in the muscles .. There is also “African sleeping sickness” transmitted by the “tsetse fly” It is caused by parasites called trypanosomes. It is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, and it is transmitted by the fly from livestock to humans. The state begins with fever and chills, then laziness and sleep until it ends in coma and death !!

.. In any case, the previous study confirms what I always believed that sleep is a "waste of life", as eight hours a day means that we sleep for twenty years (when we reach the age of sixty). Twelve hours means we sleep for thirty years. As for sixteen hours, it means losing forty years of our lives ... and when the University of California tells us that too much sleep shortens our life, it adds scientific credibility to Omar Khayyam''s advice:

Sleep did not last long

No shortening of ages throughout the night?
