A team from the Progeny Medical Center managed to remove a fibroid from the uterus of a woman in her forties, without resorting to a hysterectomy in a successful operation. The woman was infertile for more than 6 years, and examinations and sound waves showed the presence of a large uterine fiber inside the uterine cavity, which may oppose the possibility of implantation of the fetus. The operation was performed by Dr. Hamad Al-Sufyan and Dr. Hoda Abu Shama in the Gynecology, Infertility, Reproductive and In Vitro Fertilization Unit at the Atomiya Medical Center in Riyadh. The fibers, which weighed 3 kg and measured 11-12 cm, were extracted and the uterus returned to its normal shape.
It is reported that Dr. Hamad Al-Sufyan had performed a previous operation for a 38-year-old woman who was suffering from secondary infertility, 44 fibroids were removed from her uterus without resorting to a hysterectomy, in a case that is considered rare, ending her suffering that extended for 14 years. Fibers ranging in size from 5 cm were removed. To 25 cm while maintaining the integrity of the cavity, endometrium, ovaries and tubes in a successful and healthy way without bleeding.
Al-Sufyan explained that the uterine fibers are benign tumors and may affect up to 30% of women, as most of them do not cause any symptoms and do not need any treatment unless these fibers grow rapidly or their growth causes them to grow to a degree that affects neighboring organs such as the urinary bladder. Or the intestine, or interfering with childbearing, or being the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding leading to anemia. In these cases, medical intervention is necessary.
