using "microcoil" to remove part of a patient''s lung
A medical team from King Khalid University Hospital at King Saud University succeeded in removing an infected part of the lung using the microcoil technique using an endoscope. The medical team was headed by Dr. Sami Al-Nassar, Consultant of Surgery and Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, as well as Dr. Wassim Hajjar, Consultant of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Turki Al-Fahaid, Consultant of Interventional Radiology, and Dr. Ahmed Al-Talaj, Consultant of Anesthesia, as the patient in his 30s had a small tumor in the right pulmonary lobe fixed by CT scan. The patient was discharged from the hospital two days after the operation. The procedure was carried out in two stages, the first is to locate the injured part in the lung using this technique under CT scan guidance.
For a second: Transfer the patient to the operating room and remove the diseased part of the lung using a laparoscope. A modern technique that helps to remove a sample from the lung without the need for a large surgical incision in the chest. It is characterized by the ability to accurately remove part of the lung that is to be removed, which helps to avoid removing a large part of the lung and the complications that may affect general lung function. One of the advantages of using this method compared to the surgical incision is the precise removal of the affected part of the lung with the endoscope, which cannot be seen or felt without using this technique. Likewise, a smaller part of the lung is removed for accuracy of target identification using this technique, less surgical pain after the operation, as well as surgical complications after a large incision.
The aesthetics is better by using this technique, as three small incisions of 1 cm length are used for the incision compared to the surgical incision, which ranges from 10 to 15 cm.
The thoracic surgery unit at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, is the second place in the world after Canada to perform such operations.
For his part, the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Supervisor of University Hospitals, Prof. Dr. Musaed bin Muhammad Al-Salman, expressed his great pleasure at the achievement of the Thoracic Surgery Unit at King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, which confirms the role of the College of Medicine and University Hospitals in highlighting the distinctiveness of the bright face of the Saudi doctor on various Levels and in all disciplines.
