Researchers found that children under the age of 3 years who suffer from blocked tear ducts in the eye have a higher risk of developing amblyopia, or the so-called lazy eye, a condition that may cause vision loss if not treated from the start. The researchers explained that this study supports the need for comprehensive eye examinations. After examining 375 children with obstructive tear duct, the researchers found that 22% of them had a chance of developing amblyopia, 8 times more than normal children. 63% of the children in the study developed amblyopia and underwent treatment, which may include wearing medical lenses or correcting their vision.
The researchers said that the children who underwent vision correction had amblyopia in an eye with blocked tear ducts.
The researchers added that comprehensive eye examinations should be conducted for children with occluded tear duct obstruction on an ongoing basis....
