A Saudi medical team performs a successful operation to transplant two lungs
A Saudi medical team successfully performed two lungs simultaneously for a thirty-year-old Saudi woman at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Jeddah.
This operation, which lasted six hours in a row, is the third in the Middle East, and it was carried out entirely by Saudi hands, where the operation was carried out by the consultant cardiothoracic surgery and lung transplantation Dr. Iskandar Sulaiman Al-Guthmi, with the assistance of the consultant of chest diseases and lung transplantation, Dr. Salem Al-Fifi, and the medical team for organ transplantation of doctors, nurses and technicians.
The patient had suffered from acute pulmonary failure in the lungs for many years, and it was difficult, however, to continue treatment with the usual medicines for such cases, and it was necessary to perform two lungs transplantation simultaneously. & The lungs were obtained from a brain-dead patient and transplanted to the patient after conducting the tests that showed a match The species and tissues with diseased.
Iskandar Al-Guthmi, who performed the operation, which is the third to be performed at the Specialty Hospital in Jeddah, said in a statement after the operation that was performed on a Saudi youth two years ago that lung transplants in the world in general are considered medically complicated operations due to the scarcity of donors and their surgical complexity, as it is not accepted. The body can easily transplant the lung because it is the only organ connected to the outside air, in addition to the high costs of transplantation worldwide.
He explained that the lung transplantation operations began in 1963 at the University of Mississippi in the United States and did not succeed, and the patient died after the transplant, and then became active starting in 1983 after the discovery of the immunodepressant drug "cyclosporine" that helps prevent rejection of the transplanted lung that is given with other drugs to patients who undergo operations Organ transplantation so that it is not rejected.
He pointed out that a single lung transplant was performed for a patient suffering from lung fibrosis at the University of Toronto Hospital, Canada in 1983 and it was the first successful operation in the world and since that time and after the advancement of technology, kidney transplantation operations have become good and successful.
