Sabah Musharraf is the first Saudi to chair a scientific association for "Okaz": an electronic base for linking plastic surgery doctors, Laila Awad - Jeddah. Dr. Sabah Saleh Musharraf was considered the first Saudi president to head the Saudi Society for Plastic Surgery, in addition to her work as Associate Professor and Consultant Plastic Surgery and Head of the Plastic Surgery Unit at the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital at the University King Abdul Aziz in Jeddah, the presidency of the association, is a great responsibility. In the beginning, what does the position of the first Saudi woman to head a medical scientific association mean to you in the Kingdom?
There is no doubt that it is a responsibility and I would like to perform it to the fullest extent, and I was a founding member of the association and a member of the first board of directors, which was established under the umbrella of King Abdul Aziz University, and it practices its public activities in developing theoretical and applied knowledge, providing advice and scientific and applied studies to the public and private sectors, and electing me as president In this session, the association carries me with this trust, which I ask God Almighty to help me to perform it and give its due.
Plans and goals
What are the plans and objectives that the association will pursue during the next phase?
Certainly, I will work with the members of the Board of Directors on the advancement of the association and the pursuit of its goals, to bring our society to the prestigious scientific level among the international societies in plastic surgery, through some axes, namely: the development of scientific thought in the field of plastic surgery and the work to develop and revitalize it and provide scientific advice In the field of specialization through holding conferences, scientific seminars and workshops and by benefiting from the contributions of specialists and experts, whether from inside or outside the Kingdom, which enriches the exchange of local and international experiences, and coordination has been made to start the first and important activity of the Society, by approving the establishment of the Jeddah Scientific Club for Plastic Surgery, where A monthly scientific meeting is held for plastic surgeons, which helps in communication, acquaintance and exchange of experiences, and developing the scientific and professional performance of the members of the association, by holding seminars, seminars, courses and workshops related to their fields of interest, and inviting scientists and thinkers related to participate in the association’s activities, in accordance with the procedures organized for that A list of some of these activities has been prepared, and we will announce soon, God willing, as it was indicated that the establishment of the m An electronic signature of the association, and it will start operating soon, God willing, and it will contribute to increasing communication between members of the association and plastic surgeons in the Kingdom, in addition to that, ensuring that members participate in local scientific conferences and seminars and international forums, to represent the association and provide scientific research, and communicate with associations Similar internationalism, and the registration of members in those societies through the association, and the association welcomes colleagues plastic surgeons in the Kingdom and those related to plastic surgery, to join the association so that they have an effective participation in the development of the association, as it concerns all colleagues plastic surgeons in the Kingdom, as it was indicated that we are working on forming A database of plastic surgeons in the Kingdom, their specializations, and their research and practical interests, to be placed on the website, to facilitate acquaintance and to benefit from their experiences when setting up the association''s activities, conferences and workshops. Cosmetic surgery
Recently, plastic surgeries have spread in clinics and private centers, and we hear about some medical errors in these operations. What is the association’s role in addressing those errors, and its role towards these wrong operations?
The association is a scientific institution and its role in the scientific aspects of plastic surgeons, as for patients, it is medical education and spreading health awareness regarding this type of plastic surgery, and there will be a part of the association’s website that does this task. As for the supervisory side, it is the prerogative of The Ministry of Health and the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.
Change the look
Tradition is a feature of this era for young men and women now, and we find many people turn to plastic surgery to change (the look), as it is said, like any artist, advertising girl, or any star, and cosmetology has now become exploited without medical necessity and has gone out of the scope of medicine and has become just a decoration, and the doctor is just a trade without awareness The person does not need those operations, what is your comment on that, and what are the negative consequences of this phenomenon?
Yes, this type of operation is called amelioration surgeries, and I think it is the responsibility of the plastic surgeon to explain to the patient those operations, what are the positives and what are the negative consequences of them, and to convince the patient genuinely about the extent of his need for it, and the feasibility of performing it, and this is the scientific trust that most surgeons are committed to Plastic surgery, where plastic surgery is practiced in the Kingdom in accordance with Islamic law, and the doctor gives sincere advice.
Scientific Research
What about your research interest in plastic surgery?
My greatest interest in restorative surgery in the field of cleft lip and palate repair, sex correction operations, treatment of burns and scars, treatment of enlarged limbs, the so-called elephantiasis or lymphatic enlargement of the upper extremity, after breast cancer treatment and many researches in cancer treatment, and I have many researches. Published in those areas.
