newborns
Jeddah afflicts a large proportion of newborns with yellowing of the color of the skin and eyes, which is called jaundice, and jaundice usually appears on the second or third day after birth. The yolk is the yellow color that appears on the skin of many newborns, and it occurs when a chemical called bilirubin increases in the child''s blood, and it is revealed that every human’s blood contains this yolk substance that the body gets rid of through the liver, and before birth the mother’s liver gives This substance is for the fetus, and most newborns are exposed to yolk in the first days after birth because the liver needs some days to get rid of this substance in a better way. On the damage of yolk to children, Dr. Hammam adds: Most newborns suffer from simple (light) yolk, which does not harm, but in some uncommon cases, the yolk may rise to high levels, and in this case it may have side effects such as encephalopathy, For this, the percentage of yolk should be measured in newborns in order to be able to treat it even if it does not reach high levels that may lead to what was mentioned above.
And about who are the children who need more care and attention from one side when they suffer from yellowing, says Dr. Hammam: Some newborns have some factors that make them more susceptible to high bilirubin significantly, and therefore they may need to be examined after they are discharged from the hospital to ensure the level of yolk, and for children who are breastfed, the yolk may last up to 3 weeks, unlike children who are breastfed. The yolk usually lasts no more than one to two weeks.
