Medical specialists have warned against counterfeit contact lenses, sunglasses and medical equipment that are sold in supermarkets and grocery stores without supervision. They pointed out that fake glasses lead to headache, dizziness, photo-keratitis, cataract, photo-blindness, and retinal aging, while fake lenses lead to bacterial and immune infections, dry eyes, capillary growth in the cornea and corneal opacity. Because it does not have the property of penetration of oxygen to the cornea.

The consultant ophthalmologist, iris, and corneal surgery and correcting vision defects, Dr. Serene Joharji, said that unhealthy glasses expose the eyes to a greater amount of scattered light rays and scratches easily, which leads to seeing dulled colors, eye fatigue, headache and many diseases, pointing out that the most important problems are that they may be inappropriate in Its size, which causes pressure on the nose, or Ougentin, and may be high, causing it to touch the eyelashes or lower and fall on the nose.

"Imitation sunglasses do not protect against harmful sun rays, which have multiple damages to the eyes, and because of their dark color, the pupil coughs up to receive a higher amount of these rays, which increase in intensity between ten in the morning until four in the afternoon," she added.

Adulterated lenses

And warned against adulterated contact lenses that are widespread in East Asian countries. Because it does not have the property of penetrating oxygen to the cornea, which gets oxygen from the air, and the cornea of the eye is exposed to a lack of oxygen, which causes asphyxiation of cells, and this in turn leads to the occurrence of opacity in the cornea, in addition to that, it may be smaller or larger, so it curves and widths from the eye, which leads to the pressure of the cornea and change Its shape or lack of stability on the eye, causing immune inflammation, and besides all that, the eye may be exposed to superficial wounds that may lead to infection with bacterial ulcers, and its edges may be sharp and improperly made, which injures the eyelid and causes swelling that makes wearing the lens more difficult in the future, in addition to that it does not carry protection against Ultraviolet rays.

Joharji pointed out the possibility of using cosmetic lenses if you take care and caution and keep cleaning and taking care of them, and not putting makeup on before wearing them. In order to avoid exposing the eyes to infections, it is also not recommended for patients with hypothyroidism, irregular diabetes or asthma, allergies and dry eyes to use them, especially if the work of the individual requires dealing with fumes, chemicals and dust that may be attached to the lens.

She indicated that optics technicians are the most worthy of knowing the good quality of glasses through the use of special devices, and there is a simple way to know their quality, which is to choose parallel lines, look with one eye and close the other to it from a close distance in the glasses lens and move it horizontally and vertically, so if the line remains flat, it is most likely good. If the line is bumpy, it may cause distorted vision.

She emphasized that due to the presence of protection from ultraviolet rays, the specifications of the glasses are relied upon when purchasing them, and it is not possible to distinguish between the good and the fraudulent in this characteristic, as good plastic glasses carry this characteristic and the protection can be increased by adding a special coating and sunglasses, so this is written in their properties as 100 percent protection from UV rays or 400 nanometers It means maximum protection, and the high price of the glasses does not mean their quality, and you must go to an optical technician to confirm the characteristics of the glasses before buying them, and the quality of the lenses is relied upon by the manufacturer of them, there are some falsified colored lenses that degrade over time and which must be avoided in case you feel any symptoms Sideways when wearing.

Joharji indicated that fake glasses lead to headache, dizziness, photo-keratitis, cataract, photo-blindness, eye cancer, and retinal aging, while fake lenses may lead to bacterial and immunological infections, eyelid swelling, superficial and chronic corneal wounds, dry eyes, growth of capillaries in the cornea, and corneal opacity.

Awareness and prevention

The consultant plastic surgery of eyes, eyelids, tear ducts and eye pilgrims, Dr. Yasser Attia Al Mazroui, agrees with the previous opinion, saying:

Unfortunately, the phenomenon of fake glasses has invaded the world, and it cannot be controlled except through awareness. The damages resulting from such glasses are many and cannot be counted, but in the end it leads to serious problems in the eyes.

Al-Mazrouei stressed the need to acquire the original sunglasses, whether sunglasses or medical, and I do not hide if I say that the markets “even groceries” have become full of imitation glasses for farsightedness with signs (+) and are used unfortunately by the elderly, so I advise everyone not to use such as These glasses and rely on original eyeglass lenses that give correct optical dimensions and accuracy in vision.

Blurred vision

In the same context, the optometrist, Dr.Mohammed Bashawry, confirmed that the complaint is about selling unhealthy lenses, the average person may not be able to know this, but with use, he may have a headache or blurred vision, and there are devices that can detect these lenses.

He pointed out that there are shops licensed by the Ministry of Health, and the examination is carried out by an optometrist or an optometrist, which eliminates the need for an ophthalmologist examination in healthy cases, i.e. those without a history of disease.

Al-Bashawri confirmed that fake or counterfeit branded glasses are widespread in the local market, and some of these glasses may cause allergies, especially since they lack the protection element from ultraviolet rays, which facilitates long-term infection with cataract.

He cautioned that the optometrist can choose glasses according to the doctor''s prescription by implementing the sizes and numbers on the glasses lens that match the scope of vision, the viewing angles and the center of the glasses and match it with the center of the eye with extreme precision. Because any size defect can impair eyesight and affect it.
