A Saudi medical team succeeds in implanting an aortic valve by means of a catheter for the first time The operation was performed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital for a 70-year-old patient Monday 15 Rabi` al-Thani 1434 AH - February 25, 2013 AD "Expressive" picture Riyadh, Hani Al-Sufyan. A Saudi medical team succeeded in the Heart Center at King Hospital Faisal Specialist and Research Center in Riyadh, in performing a catheter aortic valve implantation with a mitral valve in a 70-year-old patient, in a recently applied procedure on a limited scale in some of the world''s leading medical centers, and the specialist was able to apply it for the first time in the East region Middle.
Dr. Hani Al-Sarjani, head of the adult cardiology department at the hospital, explained that the patient had previously undergone a mitral valve replacement with a metal valve and suffers from severe narrowing of the aortic valve and it became necessary to replace it.
The procedure was done by ing a tissue valve directly through the aorta with a catheter, and it is a modern technique that helps stabilize the valve without affecting the adjacent metal valve.
And Dr. Al Sarjani stated that this procedure was an native to the traditional surgical intervention through open heart valve replacement operations Given the health risks that may occur to the patient in such a case of this patient, who suffers from severe weakness in the heart muscle, in addition to pressure and diabetes.
He pointed out that it is scientifically known that transplantation of the aortic valve by catheter in patients who have a mitral metallic valve has recently been used on a small scale in some of the world''s leading medical centers in this field. Due to the close proximity between the mitral valves and the aorta, which requires advanced medical capabilities, noting that the patient left the hospital in good health.
Al-Sarjani said that experts from St. Thomas Hospital, one of the leading centers in valve implantation in London, have recommended the importance of working with the application that the doctor used to adopt in the future to treat such cases after learning about the operation.
