of vision diseases
A working paper in the "Third Red Sea Ophthalmology Conference" Prince Mishaal bin Majid, Governor of Jeddah, inaugurated the activities of the Third Red Sea Eye Conference, which will be held between January 4 and 7 in Jeddah, in the presence of Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz President of the Saudi Society of Ophthalmology. This conference is organized by the Saudi Ophthalmological Society and the National Guard Hospital in Jeddah in cooperation with the Eye Hospital in Jeddah.
Dr. Saeed Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, Chairman of the Conference''s Scientific Committees and Director of the Ophthalmology Training Program in the Western Region, said in an interview with "Your Health" that this conference is one of the important specialized medical conferences in the region and has met with great success in its first and second sessions. More than 350 working papers were presented at the conference in 80 scientific sessions, and it includes more than 50 training courses and workshops presented by more than 30 international speakers in addition to about 150 speakers from within the Kingdom. It is expected that the attendance of the conference will exceed 2500 ophthalmologists, optometrists, technicians and assistants. And eye nurses and those interested in ophthalmology in general.
eyes illnesses
The conference themes revolve around corneal and frontal diseases and surgery - refractive surgery to correct vision - cataract surgery and lens implantation - glaucoma - in addition to the topic of retinal and vitreous diseases and surgery, in addition to the latest scientific research findings in medicine and surgery. Ophthalmology, Evidence-Based Medicine, and Continuing Medical Education Service.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology (AAO) participated in the conference by holding a course on comprehensive review of ophthalmology for one full day of the four days of the conference. It is aimed at working ophthalmologists and interns preparing for board exams in ophthalmology. On Friday, the American Academy of Ophthalmology will present two scientific sessions on glaucoma and corneal diseases, especially keratoconus, and modern treatment methods.
The conference also witnessed active participation and intensive courses offered by the European School of Advanced Surgery in Ophthalmology, ESASO. The researchers turned to new research in the field of presbyopia atrophy in terms of diagnosis and treatment. The conference also reviewed diseases and retinopathy in preterm infants and modern retinal and vitreous surgeries.
The conference also discussed retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and modern methods of diagnosis and treatment such as laser and ophthalmic injections and their indications. It also thoroughly examined diseases of keratoconus, methods of treatment and the latest research findings in this field, in addition to modern methods of correcting vision, and treating cataracts. Femto Laser (Calvimto Lasik, Femtosmile and Femtofico), which deals with the treatment of presbyopia, the treatment of near vision in the age after forty (perspiration) and the latest research in this field.
On the sidelines of the conference, several courses and workshops will be held in medical research and evidence-based medicine and research methods, in addition to workshops in medical education. For the first time, several sessions for junior physicians were d under the name of Young Ophthalmology Sessions to present their carefully ed clinical papers and research papers. This is in addition to creating a platform for displaying medical abstracts (Posters).
Common eye problems
Cataract and glaucoma are common eye problems, so what is the difference between them? Why does the eye get water? Which is more dangerous for the injured?
White water. Dr. Saeed bin Abdullah Al-Ghamdi explained that white water (cataract or white cataract) is the occurrence of opacities that lead to the loss of the natural lens’s transparency and has nothing to do with the "water" metaphorically in the name.
There are several causes of infection with white water, the most common of which is aging (such as white black hair or gray hair if the analogy is correct), and there is white water (congenital) resulting from some complications of pregnancy such as some infections and diseases known medically, including what is caused by direct eye injuries or infections inside the eye (Blueberry infections) or what is caused by some medications such as cortisone or as a complication of some chronic diseases such as diabetes, or as a result of exposure to some environmental factors such as ultraviolet rays for long periods or exposure to therapeutic rays in the head and neck area, or the practice of some unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol.
Diagnosis is made by the examination device in the ophthalmology clinic with the expansion of the pupil of the eye with medical s, and in advanced cases, a change in the color of the eye (the pupil, which is the space in the center of the colored iris) can be observed as it changes from black to white.
As for the symptoms, the patient complains of a gradual decrease in vision in one or both eyes without pain or redness, and in the elderly, a continuous change in the sizes of the glasses may be observed. Also, the patient may notice a decrease in night vision or an inability to tolerate the lights emanating from the oncoming cars in the event of drivers at night. Also, the patient may suffer from double or multiple vision of images and shapes. The ophthalmologist notices a change in the transparency of the natural lens and the appearance of opacities.
The cataract treatment is by removing the opaque lens (opaque) and replacing it with a replacement transparent and clear artificial lens that is implanted accurately inside the eye for life. The lens is removed by several methods (such as incision, ultrasound, or femto-laser for some cases) decided by the surgeon. There is no specific time for surgical intervention, but it depends on the patient’s complaint and the extent of the effect of low vision on daily activity and carrying out daily tasks, and this varies from patient to patient. The intervention may be early for motorists, for example, as they need high visual acuity.
Glaucoma
The blue water. Dr. Saeed Al-Ghamdi explained that glaucoma is a completely different disease and also has nothing to do with the water metaphorically mentioned in the name, which is a high pressure inside the eye, which may lead to permanent and irreversible damage to the fibers of the optic nerve that connects the retina to the brain. It has several types and it may appear in many forms and characteristics, the most important of which is an increase in intraocular pressure accompanied by changes in the shape of the optic nerve and changes in the field of vision (peripheral vision). There are many types of glaucoma, including congenital (since birth), including those acquired during the years of life, including chronic open-angle and not accompanied by pain, and narrow or closed angle, usually accompanied by eye pain and acute loss of vision, but most types share high eye pressure and deterioration in Vision usually starts from the extremities until it reaches the center of the eyes in late cases, and the rise in intraocular pressure is due to several causes and changes inside the eye, the most important of which is slow drainage of the transparent fluid inside the eye, resulting in a pool of water and a rise in pressure inside the eye.
Symptoms include the patient noticing a change in peripheral vision in advanced cases, and in most cases the patient does not feel pain or redness, but the diagnosis is made in the clinic. And here lies the importance of regular (routine) examination by an ophthalmologist, especially after the age of forty or earlier for people who have a family history of glaucoma. The doctor notes that the intraocular pressure is higher than the normal range (10-21 mm Hg) accompanied by changes in the shape of the eye nerve and a deterioration in the peripheral field of vision when examining the field of vision.
The treatment is carried out in a number of ways that differ according to the type of glaucoma, the patient’s age and the extent of damage to the optic nerve. There is drug treatment by using medical s that reduce pressure in the eye, or by using oral medications in some cases. There is laser treatment or surgical treatment to a drainage of eye fluid and then reduce intraocular pressure.
What are the age groups at risk of infection with the two diseases? Dr. replied. Al-Ghamdi said that all ages are exposed, and for short, the most common type of cataract is what is related to aging, as it is estimated that half of the population of the United States who exceeded eighty either have white water or have undergone cataract operations before that age, and most types of blue water are Chronic Open Angle Glaucoma is most common and appears with age, particularly after the fifth decade or earlier, in people of dark skin or those with a family history of the disease.
Dr. advises. Al-Ghamdi by following healthy and correct dietary habits for the sake of healthy eyes, wearing sunglasses, especially when exposed to the sun for long periods, and avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol. It is also recommended to follow up regularly with an ophthalmologist after the age of forty or earlier for those who suffer from chronic diseases that cause eye complications such as diabetes, or those who have a family history of some eye diseases such as glaucoma, or those who suffer from symptoms or changes in vision and not tolerate it.
