Palm surgery or the so-called carpal tunnel syndrome surgery is one of the most common surgeries, which aims to reduce pressure on the median nerve in the palm by severing the ligament that causes pain.
When is palm surgery performed?
Palm surgery is used in some cases, as follows
Failure to respond to various treatments, after a long series of treatment with a period ranging from 3 to 12 months.
The appearance of some symptoms that limit the patient''s ability to perform daily activities, such as: permanent loss of sensation, movement coordination disorders, and a feeling of weakness in the thumb, in addition to sleep disturbances caused by pain.
The median nerve is severely damaged, or the possibility of it being damaged.
Before the operation
Some tests are done for the patient, and the doctor must be informed of all the medications, nutritional supplements and herbs he takes before the operation.
during operation
Palm surgery is performed by cutting the carpal ligament that forms the upper part of the carpal tunnel in the palm of the hand, releasing the pressure on the median nerve.
Any other tissue, such as cancerous tissue, that may be causing pressure on the median nerve is also removed.
The steps of the surgery depend on the type of surgery used as follows
Open carpal tunnel surgery
This surgery allows the attending physician to view a wide range of internal tissues, as this is done by making an incision in the palm of the hand. Most of the times, this type of operation requires a longer recovery period, and it can leave long-term scars.
Some surgeons today perform open surgical procedures, making an incision smaller than the incision made during traditional surgery, in order to shorten the healing time and reduce the resulting scars.
Endoscopy of the palm of the hand
This surgery requires making a very small incision in the wrist, or two incisions at most, and then ing a small endoscope to monitor the procedure without the need for a large incision, and the recovery period is much faster, and the resulting scars are light.
Post-operative stage
The feeling of pain after surgery continues for a period ranging from several weeks to several months, and it is important to gradually train the wrist by performing some exercises after releasing the ligament.
