Hemangioma is a benign tumor resulting from the expansion and tangle of some blood vessels, and this tumor is more common in childhood, affecting approximately 5-10% of children at the age of one year.
The disease develops rapidly in the postpartum period, and lasts from 3-9 months, and then begins a stabilization period that ends with the tumor slowly shrinking and usually lasts from 18 months to 10 years.
The tumor disappears completely in 30% of children up to the age of 3 years, 50% by the age of 5 years, and 70-90% by the age of 7 years.
Types of hemangiomas
Hemangiomas can be classified according to the depth of their appearance into four types as follows:
Superficial hemangiomas: This type appears as red bumps.
Subcutaneous hemangiomas: These tumors are also known as deep hemangiomas.
Hemangiomas of the internal organs: They occur in many organs such as the liver, brain, intestines, lungs, and tongue.
Symptoms of hemangioma
Symptoms appear in the form of red spots that spread to many areas of the body, such as: the face, scalp, chest and back, and then turn into a spongy, rubbery bump.
Hemangioma causes and risk factors
The tumor is caused by the collection of blood vessels in the form of a dense mass, and the cause of this gathering is not clearly known.
Cases most likely to develop hemangioma
There are some cases that are more susceptible to hemangiomas, as follows
Premature babies, especially females.
Babies whose mothers had chorionic villus sampling during pregnancy.
hemangioma complications
Complications of hemangiomas are rare and include the following
Bleeding from the tumor.
Ulcers accompanied by pain.
scars in the area.
infection.
Marked decrease in the number of platelets.
Diagnosis of hemangioma
Hemangioma is diagnosed in many ways, such as the following
Ultrasound imaging.
Computed tomography.
Magnetic resonance imaging.
Hemangioma treatment
Hemangioma treatment includes the following
Corticosteroids.
Interferon injection.
Laser treatment or cryosurgery.
Surgical excision.
Radiation therapy.
Hemangioma prevention
In fact, there are no clear ways to prevent infection, as its causes are unknown.
