Double eyelid surgery

The eyelid is described as double if there is a wrinkle in the area between the eyelashes and the eyebrow. On the other hand, Asians are usually known as a single eyelid or a single eyelid in which this fold is absent, giving their eyes a smaller and more bulging appearance.

As for double eyelid surgery, it is the most popular cosmetic surgery in East Asia. Millions of Asians with small eyes and single eyelids undergo this surgery to build folds and enlarge their eyes.

Double eyelid surgery is a modern surgery and a fashion for Asians to enhance the beauty of their eyes with the look and attractiveness of wide eyes.

Double eyelid surgery can enlarge the vertical dimensions of the palpebral fissure and the visible iris and increase the ratio of eye height to palpebral fissure length.

About 50% of Asians have a single eyelid, and double eyelid surgery is in third place after rhinoplasty and breast augmentation.

The surgeon must be aware of the wide range of surgical options in eyelid modification and customize them according to the preferences of each individual patient, as there are significant differences between different geographical regions in Asia.

Candidates for double eyelid surgery

If a person suffers from one of the following, they may be a good candidate for double eyelid surgery:

The eyelid covers much of the upper half of the iris.

The person is not satisfied with the shape of his eyelid.

The eyelids contain excess fat and the eyes look puffy.

The upper eyelid folds inward when the eye is opened. This may cause the eyelashes to scratch the cornea, causing irritation and damage.

Double eyelid techniques

There are several techniques for double eyelid surgery, including the following

Full incision technique

This technique is most suitable for patients with excess fat and skin in the upper eyelid. This method provides the most stable results out of the three methods mentioned here. However, since there is an incision in most of the length of the new eyelid, there will be a visible scar. However, the eyelid skin is very thin. Therefore, this scar is usually cosmetically acceptable.

The steps of double eyelid surgery with this technique are as follows

The plastic surgeon makes an incision in the eyelid.

Excess fat and skin removal in the upper eyelid is performed as needed.

The surgeon uses sutures to mimic the effectiveness of the fibrous bonds that are naturally present in the double eyelid.

The length of the incision is then closed with sutures which will be removed in the clinic 4-6 days after the surgery.

Partial incision technique

This technique is most suitable for patients who do not have excess skin but have excess fat inside their eyelids, or even a patient who does not have excess skin or fat but wants more reliable and permanent results compared to the non-surgical method.

The main benefit of this method is minimal scarring, as the surgeon will make an incision at the upper border of the eyelid crease but will keep the length of this incision as short as possible.

This incision acts as an access point for the surgeon to remove excess fat. Since this small incision provides a much smaller surgical window than the full incision method, this operation is more difficult.

An incision smaller than 5 millimeters usually results in undetectable scarring.

Non-surgical technique

This method is ideal for those who do not have excess fat or skin on their eyelids.

The main advantage is the absence of a surgical scar and the swelling is minimal and may not be present, but in return it is not as flexible as the surgical methods and may produce an exposed double eyelid in the future.

This technique includes the following steps

The plastic surgeon s several small holes.

Through it, the surgeon s sutures to mimic the effectiveness of the fibrous ties found naturally in the double eyelid.

All sutures are hidden under the eyelid skin, so there is no need to visit the clinic to remove any sutures.

Complications of double eyelid surgery

The following complications may be experienced by the person undergoing double eyelid surgery:

Minor pain after the operation.

Swelling of the eyelid and depends on the amount of trauma the eyelid was exposed to during the surgery.

Bruises disappear within two weeks.
