A Saudi medical team from the King Fahd Hospital of the Armed Forces and the Prince Sultan Center for the Treatment of Heart Diseases and Surgery has succeeded in implanting a small pacemaker, produced by Medtronic. The two Saudi medical bodies are referred to as the leaders in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle East and Africa, in the use of this device, since it obtained the conformity mark of safety and European safety "CE Mark", last April.
This device, called "Micra", performs its work without the presence of the traditional wire, and connects to the heart through the arteries of the patient''s body, using a catheter, connected to the origin of the thigh. The Saudi team of doctors performed the first 5 transplants in patients outside of clinical trials, all of which were successful.
The medical team consisted of Dr. Raed Suwaidan, Dr. Fayez Bukhari, consultants of electrophysiology at King Fahd Hospital of the Armed Forces, Dr. Ahmed Al Faqih, and Dr. Khaled Daghriri, consultants of electrophysiology at Prince Sultan Center for Cardiac Surgery.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Faqih said, "This miniature technology has gained wide acceptance levels among the patients, due to its small size and advanced design, and the main benefits of this new device are in reducing potential complications and reducing the time needed for postoperative recovery."
