A scientific team from King Abdulaziz University has succeeded in registering a global patent from the US Patent Office, following the creation of an artificial surgical mesh with innovative anti-bacterial properties.

The head of the scientific team, consultant obesity and minimally invasive surgery at the university, Dr. Abdul Malik bin Muhammad Saleh Al-Taf, explained that the invention is to a surgical prosthetic network that can be used in surgeries to treat hernia in contaminated surgical areas.

Pointing out that in some advanced hernia cases, the surgical areas are contaminated with bacteria present in the tissues of the body, which constitutes an obstacle to the use of artificial networks in these cases, so surgeons are forced to treat the hernia without using a net or to use a (vital) network that is less effective than artificial networks. Antibiotic in the surrounding tissues for a period of at least 14 days, which leads to elimination of bacteria.
