A surgical team in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Security Forces Hospital in Riyadh has succeeded in preserving the integrity of the uterus and ovaries of a 26-year-old Saudi girl who had never given birth during the surgery to remove more than 50 fibroids from her uterus. The consultant of obstetrics, gynecology and gynecological oncology at the Security Forces Hospital, the supervisor of the case, Dr. Imad Rashad Saqr, indicated that the patient had previously undergone surgery, during which eight benign tumors were successfully removed from her uterus, and after two years, the previous symptoms of severe abdominal pain and swelling returned, in addition to To severe bleeding during the period of the menstrual cycle », adding that after conducting the necessary examinations, sound rays and laboratory analyzes, it became clear that she had fibroids in the uterus in an active state and in large quantities and sizes.
He pointed out that CT scans and magnetic resonance rays showed that the size of the uterus reached 30 cm, “during which the locations and numbers of tumors were determined ... which prompted the medical team to meet with the patient and her guardian and explain the surgery and its danger to the uterus in the event of bleeding ... as well. The surgical plan was drawn carefully, bearing in mind the preservation of the integrity of the uterus and ovaries from the removal as a primary goal of surgery, as the patient had not previously given birth.
Dr. Saqr explained that the surgery took more than 6 hours, as the abdomen was opened and all the tumors were removed, which posed a challenge to the surgical team, "because each tumor must be removed separately while preserving the uterus." He said: “According to the medically recognized number of tumors that reach from 20 to 30 fibroids, it is very difficult to remove them without a complete removal of the uterus ... But in this case the number of tumors reached more than 50 tumors of different sizes, the largest of which was 15 cm in diameter, while The diameter of the rest ranged between 2 and 12 cm.
He emphasized that the medical team succeeded in removing all tumors while preserving the integrity of the uterus and ovaries from the removal, "which means that her chances of pregnancy and childbearing still exist," pointing out that the patient left the hospital in good health without any of the symptoms that bothered her.
