breakthrough in orthopedic lengthening surgery
A Saudi professor has achieved a new medical breakthrough in the field of orthopedic lengthening surgery using a new and advanced medical technology applied for the first time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region.
Where the head of the orthopedics department and the associate professor of orthopedics, joints and spine surgery at the College of Medicine at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Professor Dr. Muhammad Jalal Al-Sayyad, was able to apply this technique to 5 cases in the university hospital, and these surgeries in the field of bone lengthening achieved a very high success rate. To one hundred percent and the patients were able to walk normally after the end of the bone lengthening period.
Professor Al-Sayyad said, "The new technology that has been applied is a new scientific revolution applied in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region for the first time, as it was applied only in Germany. The Kingdom is the second country in the world to have this advanced technology in the field of orthopedic lengthening surgery."
He explained that the new technique is an internal lengthening of the bones with a spinal screw that is controlled remotely by the remote control and without the need for any external fixators or specific movement of the leg in addition to the absence of pain after the surgery.
He stressed that this technique, which has brought about a scientific revolution in the field of bone lengthening, is considered the latest technology in the world and has not yet been applied in other countries, noting that this new technique facilitates bone lengthening if compared to the old Russian laser method.
Professor Al-Sayyad said that the new internal spinal screw, which he called Vet Bunn, is used to treat many conditions, including short stature or short stature resulting from accidents and fractures, as well as birth defects and shortness resulting from polio.
He indicated that this technique can be applied to age groups between ten and fifty years, and the procedure takes two hours, after which the procedure of lengthening the bones begins five days after the operation, where the bones are lengthened at a rate of one millimeter per day without any effort from the patient except to operate the remote control for a minute and a half Just .
Professor Al-Sayyad confirmed that the patient can remove the internal spinal screw after a year and a half, as the patient returns to its normal state and uses his leg to walk after the end of the bone lengthening period.
He noted the development achieved by the Kingdom in the medical field and the introduction of very advanced technologies into its hospitals, noting that the University Hospital at King Abdulaziz University is today one of the most important advanced medical centers in the world.
Professor Al-Sayyad warned of traffic accidents, which are one of the most important reasons for the occurrence of advanced fractures and work to take the principle of prevention by adhering to traffic instructions and not recklessly driving.
