Heart disease has become the first cause of death in most countries of the developed world, especially in the United States, where more than half a million Americans die annually from heart disease, and Saudi Arabia suffers from the same prevalence of heart disease, as the proportion of coronary artery disease and heart according to local research reached 6% Of the citizens, in addition to the percentage of diabetes in the Kingdom, which reaches about 27%, as well as the high percentage of diabetic patients with heart disease in Saudi Arabia to about 70%, which is one of the highest global rates, which indicates the magnitude of the problem in our Saudi society. During the conference, banners and leaflets known as the Kingdom and the Saudi Cardiac Catheterization Association and its objectives were placed for the first time, after a great effort by Dr. Muhammad Belghith Al-Barqi, a consultant cardiology and catheterization at the Heart Center in King Abdulaziz Medical City in the National Guard in Riyadh and the coordinator of the Saudi delegation participating in the conference.

For his part, Dr. Al-Barqi explained that participation in international conferences has a great impact on improving service, exchanging medical expertise and opinions, and exchanging visits, indicating that the European side will be hosted to participate in the Saudi Heart Association conference in Saudi Arabia, which will be held in Riyadh in February 2008. Al-Barqi confirmed that a large group of doctors agreed to attend the conference in Saudi Arabia, including: Professor John Marco, Professor John Pierre Basand, Professor Christian Ham, Professor Eric Eckhaut, and Professor Peter Fitz Gerald.

Dr. Al-Barqi praised the distinguished Saudi presence this year, which reached more than 50 Saudi cardiologists who were present during the conference days, apart from the Gulf and Arab attendees.

Al-Barqi said that one of the most important recommendations of the conference is that cardiac patients for whom medication stents were installed through the catheter should continue to take Plavix 75 milligrams for a period of no less than a year because of the drug’s effectiveness in preventing blood clotting inside the coronary artery, and that research is directed towards the use of stents quickly. The dissolution as well as the application of substances on the wall of the stents speed up the healing of the coronary artery.
