Dr. Faisal Shaheen to "The Second with Daoud": Saudi Arabia surpassed America and Europe in organ transplantation. Dr. Faisal Abdul Rahman Shaheen, Director General of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, confirmed that the success rates of organ transplantation in the Kingdom exceeded the success rates in European countries and the United States. Shaheen indicated that patients with kidney failure are constantly increasing in Saudi Arabia as a result of following up on cases with hemodialysis and plutonal dialysis, warning of the seriousness of the situation for liver patients who do not find donors to save their lives, after the strict procedures of the World Health Organization.

Faisal Shaheen said - on Monday, October 17th in the second program with Dawood on MBC FM - "The success rate in liver transplantation operations in the Kingdom has reached 85%, which is a very good rate, exceeding the success rates in Europe and America."

He added: "We in the Kingdom need 500 liver transplantation annually, as a result of the spread of some viruses, especially virus C and B, or some immune diseases, while the state works to help the families of donors who are brain dead, and the Cabinet also decided to aid donors while they are alive."

Kidney transplantation is the highest

Dr. Faisal Shaheen pointed out that organ transplantation is focused more on the kidneys for several reasons, first that kidney patients are more than any other patients, and secondly that a kidney patient can survive for several years. Because doctors treat it with hemodialysis or plutonium.

He noted that the number of patients in the Kingdom has reached nearly 13,000 patients, of whom 12,000 do hemodialysis, and a thousand patients receive plutonal dialysis, and said: “We have an annual increase in kidney failure patients that reaches nearly 2,500 patients annually, either. It is grown for them, or 10-15% of them die. "

Regarding the prevalence of the disease between different ages, he said: “The prevalence of the disease among children reaches from 4 to 10%, and the presence of doctors from consultants and kidney specialists in children was a major reason for the rate of kidney failure in children being much less, but the increase in the number of elderly people with failure. It increased by a very large percentage from the 1980s and 1990s, so now we have approximately 12% of the number of patients with kidney failure over the age of 65, and this number is large and will increase over time. "

20% of the donors

Dr. Faisal Shaheen indicated that 95% of families of brain-dead persons acknowledge their willingness to donate their organs as soon as his death is confirmed, but only 20% of them actually donate.

Shaheen explained this by saying: “I still feel my experience in this field, that emotion plays a very big role in the family’s decision to donate, and trust in the health facility has a role as well. Doctors diagnosed him correctly, the donation rate will increase, but in our culture we still have hope until the last moment, even if we are certain that the death occurred 100%.
