Yesterday, the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Al-Noor Specialized Hospital in Makkah Al-Mukarramah succeeded in performing an open heart operation for a 4-year-old Saudi child who suffers from 3 congenital heart anomalies since his birth, which is the presence of an arterial canal between the pulmonary and aortic arteries and two holes between the atria and the ventricles with an area of 1.5 and 0.5 Centimeter.
The head of the pediatric cardiac surgery department at the hospital, Dr. Marwan bin Saleh Tayyib, who performed the operation, explained that the child had come to the hospital suffering from shortness of breath with cyanosis in the body and other health problems, indicating that after the medical examinations of the child by ultrasound and cardiac catheterization, it was found that birth defects were present. Which required a surgical intervention to save the child''s life after the will of the Almighty.
He indicated that during the operation, which took four hours, the arterial canal was tied and the holes closed with two surgical patches, confirming that the child is currently enjoying, praise be to God, in good health, as the ventilator has been removed from him and he will leave the hospital within the next few days, God willing, after the necessary medical follow-up is completed.
And Dr. Tayeb stated that congenital anomalies may result from the marriage of relatives who carry certain genetic characteristics or as a result of the pregnant mother''s use of medicinal drugs during the first months of pregnancy without consulting the specialist doctor or from exposure to x-rays.
