What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is defined as a scoliosis with twisting of the trunk and parts of the spine against each other. Also, the profile is often variable as well. So we can talk here about three-dimensional distortion, aberration in three dimensions. In the forward flexion test (Adam''s flexion test), the torso can be better observed (rib hump, lumbar vertebrae).

How does scoliosis arise?

Scoliosis can have a variety of causes, but in most cases of scoliosis the cause is unknown (occult scoliosis). One type of obscure scoliosis is infantile scoliosis, which can appear up to three years of age, juvenile scoliosis, which appears between the ages of 4 and 10, and adolescent scoliosis, which appears after the age of ten.

In addition, there are bone and rib abnormalities (congenital scoliosis), scoliosis caused by diseases of the nerves and muscles (neuromuscular scoliosis) and other causes as well, such as tumors or metabolic diseases. The so-called infant scoliosis is benign and has nothing to do with the known types of scoliosis.

Scoliosis in children

Occult scoliosis affects about 2-4% of children and young adults. While only 0.5% of all children and young people need treatment. During the period of intense growth, severe crooked deformation can occur which, in addition to phenotypic effects, can lead to clinically impaired function in some rare cases.

Scoliosis symptoms

Scoliosis is usually discovered at puberty (in a swimming pool, for example). In most cases, scoliosis does not lead to a significant impairment in health functions, but rather affects the appearance more. However, moderate-grade curvatures lead to mild impairment in the functions of the spine and respiratory system. Scoliosis does not always lead to severe pain or affect the age of the respiratory system, according to a Swedish study. This only occurs when the degree of curvature is more than 100 degrees.

How is scoliosis diagnosed?

Clinical diagnosis is fundamental to the diagnosis of the disease, as the patient leans forward, it is easy to notice the deformity associated with scoliosis (forward bend test). Also, the size of the rib hump and the degree of torsion can be measured by what is known as the scoliosis scale.

The deviation from the vertical position of the body is also important and can be documented photographically or by surface measuring devices such as a digital vertebrae meter. Many cases of scoliosis can be seen by the difference in height of the shoulder blades.

Radiography can also assess the shape and degree of scoliosis and measure the degree of curvature (according to the Cobb scale). Also, radiography (of the pelvis and the left hand) can estimate the growth of the spine and draw accurate predictions about future developments.

How is the treatment of the faucet?

Scoliosis treatment should be carried out by specialists who are experts in this disease. The choice of treatment method depends on the age of the patient and the degree of deformity (Cobb''s angle).

Scoliosis brace and physical therapy

In the event of a curvature (Cobb angle) of less than 20 degrees, treatment with physical therapy only is recommended. Recently, it is recommended to use an native method to start early by placing a corset at night in case the curvature is 15 degrees in the growing age. In the event that the curvature is larger, it can be treated by physical therapy and the use of a corset for 16-23 hours per day. The corset affects the direction of spine growth. Curvature can be straightened with a corset only in good cases.

Currently, the gypsum stent is being replaced with one that is manufactured according to a computer-assisted survey. It can be equipped without much trouble. There are now standards for braces, which are constantly being developed for greater comfort and improvement in their orthotic effect.

Scoliosis surgery: when?

Scoliosis is recommended when the Cobb angle is more than 45 percent. The main goal of surgery is to correct the deformity. This surgery should be done at the end of the growing age. In this surgery, the spine is straightened and tightened using surgical implants. In the end, the movement is removed from the part that was fixed, but this does not constitute any obstacle to the patient''s chest cage.

In order to straighten torsion, rods with screws are placed on the upper and lower ends of the spine. Nowadays, paraplegia as a result of spinal cord injury is a rare case. Many complications of this operation occur 5 to 20 years after the operation, so it is not possible to predict the long-term results of the operation. It is not yet proven that scoliosis surgery leads to long-term improvement in scoliosis symptoms.

Can a person be cured of scoliosis?

The diagnosis of scoliosis depends on the age, severity of the disease and the etiology of the disease. Therefore, the growth of the spine in young patients can be affected and straightened effectively. Where the deformity of the spine in the young age can be successfully corrected through the traditional treatment of physical therapy and orthodontic braces.
